What is that rattle?

Yesterday Sonic was standing in the backyard barking down the side of the house, which is unusual for him.  I took a peek and thought I heard water being sprayed, ignored it, and went back in the house.

A little bit later I was taking the recycling out to our bin on the side of our house and as I was walking I heard this really loud wind-up-toy kind of noise but kept walking.  A split second later my brain told me to drop the recycling and get out of there.

I went inside the house and looked out the guest bedroom window.  He was coiled up and still rattling at me.    The \”rattle\” is much different from what I would have expected but was very loud and very clear.  It\’s unnerving to know that I probably walked within 1 – 2 feet of this guy.

I called Animal Control and they said they would be here within an hour and to keep an eye on the snake.  There was no way I was letting this guy out of my sight.    And he started moving.

He worked his way up the path and was sitting in a sunny spot when Animal Control arrived.

Animal Control was in and out of here in less than 5 minutes.  I shot this video so I could record the sound to play for Don and Quinn.  Not much to see but if you turn the volume up that static-y sound is the snake.

Our boy Sonic could sense the danger of the snake and did not approach it at all.  Even after the snake was taken away Sonic was pretty spooked by the smell of it on the side of the house.

And now we know.  I didn\’t think we were immune but never expected to see one in our own yard.  Sonic is scheduled to go to Rattlesnake Avoidance Training and I\’m never going outside again 🙂  And I hope you will still come visit!!

Kauai: Days 7 – 8

Friday, last day!  There are quite a few food trucks on Kauai and for our last breakfast we decided to try out Fresh Bite.  I got the Caramelized Pineapple Pancakes with Coconut Syrup and a fruit salad.  Yum!!
Then it was back to Anini Beach.  We were pretty surprised to be the only ones on the beach at 11 am.  But no complaints!

When we were at this beach 3 days prior Quinn had found a coconut that he asked Don to crack.  Don couldn\’t quite crack it but created a quite nice Coco-Mallet.  It got lots of use on both days.

The snorkeling was generally pretty unimpressive but on our way out we passed this huge plastic crate.  Don hovered over it for a while and spotted a Moray Eel hiding out.

I love this beach!!

A quick stop for a geocache and a selfie!

There are quite a few one lane bridges, especially on the quiet North Shore.  This is one that we went over the most.

It\’s Saturday and time to go home.  But we were treated to the most incredible rainbow(s).  You could almost see the pot of gold it was so close.

And heading home.

One last sunset somewhere over the Pacific.  We\’ll see you soon Kauai!

Kauai: Days 5 – 6

Wednesday morning it was very rainy.  We were slow to get moving and ended up having lunch at our condo before we decided to get out regardless of the rain.
We had a plan to head north and stop at the first beach where we could find parking, which could be difficult.  We got front row parking at Tunnels beach so we parked it there for the day.
As we headed north we drove in to sunny skies!

Most of the snorkeling was pretty shallow and you had to navigate the lava rock reefs.

This give you a glimpse why they call it Tunnels Beach.  All the lava tube formations.

We made it back to Hanalei Bay for the sunset and rain.

Thursday morning we woke up to a slight rainbow.  You can barely see it in the center of this picture.

We decided to go to the beach that was directly below our resort and it didn\’t disappoint.

A look out at sea back towards the beach.  The St. Regis Hotel (cha-ching) is on the left and our condo resort is on the bluff on the right.

This happened to us all the time.  Better go in so we don\’t get wet!

Don had the great idea to rent a kayak and go up the Hanalei River.  We kayaked right off the beach and went around the bend right up the river.

We had a blast and Don did most of the work for the family.

A look up river.

We got Quinn decked out in his finest Hawaiin shirt for dinner.  He was a big fan of the local juice POG (pineapple, orange, guava or some variation thereof).

And yes, another shave ice.
