July Life

I have a School Memories book for Quinn that we fill out at the end of every school year.  It\’s always good to do it before the next school year starts.  Look at all that hair.

The look he\’s giving me while I\’m taking his picture.  Tween \’tude.

Last day of school pic?  Kinda.

We spent a day at the beach with a couple of friends.  Outside and social distancing.    Being buried in the sand is a requirement.
I bought this size 14 wetsuit for Quinn last year and it is already too small.  We\’ll make it work for the rest of the year and look for a good used one next year.   It definitely helps him stay warm in our freezing cold water.

It was such a beautiful day.

Quinn was the only kid in our group to spend a significant amount of time in the water.  Did I mention that he go fried?  Ugh.  Never enough sunscreen.

Another case of swimmer\’s ear but in the other ear.  Fortunately it didn\’t get infected this time around so he just needed drops.  Oh, did I mention that all his pants are super short?
We\’ve had outdoor lunch with a couple of friends, including Elias and his mother.  We were checking to see who was taller.  I think Elias by 1/2 inch or so.

Accessible Afternoon Hike

I try to get Quinn out of the house at least once a day.  Sometimes it\’s so warm in the afternoon we end up staying in.
But I remembered this shady, short, flat hike that was just right at 2 pm.  It\’s an \”accessible\” hike with a rope and braille for the blind,  It claims to be wheelchair friendly, although I couldn\’t see a wheelchair on this trail.
Quinn likes to wear a mask for the dust.

Baby Birds

We noticed some busy birds building a nest in the pergola above our outdoor table.  Using an extended selfie-style stick with my iphone I was able to get a picture of the eggs.  This is Monday.

Mama sat on those eggs for several days straight. When she left I snapped a picture.  Thursday.
Friday morning Don found a baby bird on the ground that fell out of the nest over night and didn\’t make it.   Thinking ahead, Don placed the dog bed under the nest to cushion any falls. This baby bird fell out of the nest Friday afternoon and we placed it back in the nest.

Several hours later another bird fell out and we put it back in the nest.  WTH birdies?  So we placed the nest in the top of a pizza box and placed it back in the original location.

Unfortunately mama bird did not come back to the nest.  You hear that touching a bird will prevent a mom from returning to the nest but that is said to be a myth.
We contacted a local wildlife rescue group and offered to drive the babies to them.  But they said birds this young don\’t usually make it without their mama and to secure the nest (as we had) and hope that mama comes back.
Unfortunately mama never returned.  When we checked the nest the next day all the babies were pushed against the side of the box and would have fallen had it not been for the raised edge.  We did all that we could for them but they didn\’t make it.  2020 just sucks.
