Summer Jazz Combo

I’ve noticed that kids in Quinn’s bands break into smaller groups and form combos. Trombone combos, jazz combos, etc. So I got to work near the end of this last school year and put together a little summer jazz combo for Quinn and some friends. I normally don’t toot my own horn, but this was all my doing.

The kids met once week at our house over the summer with Quinn’s trombone tutor, Nathan. The goal was to get the kids socializing and playing their instruments over the summer and they loved it! After the lesson was over they would usually continue playing and having fun. Mission accomplished!

Last night they played for their adoring parents and it was just a perfect summer night!

Costa Rica: The Fall and the Aftermath

Quinn and I had been joking about the gauntlet of horrors at the beach resort. The sand was hotter than hell so we would run across the sand and then come to an abrupt halt once we reached the pool because the pool decking was so slippery. Ridiculously slippery.

Friday morning we got out of the pool to go for a swim in the ocean. I walked around a corner and slipped an fell. The worst fall of my life and I knew vacation was instantly over. I was in excruciating pain and my wrist was disfigured. Don and the hotel staff plopped my in a wheelchair and ran me across the street to a local clinic.

From the outside, the clinic didn’t look so great but they were amazing. The doctor immediately numbed my wrist and told me that I would need surgery.

Long story short, Don packed up our hotel room, checked out, and we all took a medical flight to the capital, San Jose, where I would get surgery. My fall was around 11 am, we arrived in San Jose around 3 pm, I had surgery around 10 pm, and was asleep in a hotel room at 3 am.

We had one day in San Jose before we flew out early Sunday morning, which was just a day earlier than planned.

We made it home Sunday morning and I was able to see a UCLA orthopedic doctor on Monday who said the Costa Rican doctors did a decent job (not perfect but decent). So that was how we ended our Costa Rican vacation!
