Northern Michigan

Don and I decided to vacation in Northern Michigan while Quinn was at Interlochen Arts Camp.

Leaving LA and a View of the Marine Layer from above, an easily recognizable O’Hare, and a Chicago Dog during our layover.

We booked a hotel on Traverse Bay, which is part of Lake Michigan. It was quite lovely.

After we dropped Quinn off, we went on a hike to see Sleeping Bear Dunes. You can see the huge dunes in the distance.

A pitstop on the way back to our hotel.

Don spent his first Father’s Day without the kid but we made the most of it. There are ALOT of wineries in the area — the view was great but the wine wasn’t.

I love my sunsets.

Morning view vs. evening view from our room. The sun doesn’t set until 9:30 pm!!

Monday we drove 2.5 hours to take the ferry to Mackinac Island. We had lunch and then rented bikes to ride around the island — about 8 miles. No cars allowed on the island but there were a lot of horse drawn carriages.

Another day, another sunset.

Interlochen and Traverse City are less than an hour drive to Meg’s families cottage on Lake Michigan. On Tuesday we drove to the cottage to spend the rest of the week with Corky & Meg.

Meg has spent 60+ summers in this area so she knew all the best places to go. First up is Crystal Lake and it is very aptly named. Don went for a swim but the rest of us were not so bold. The water was a little chilly.

On Thursday after camp, we visited a beautiful sunset spot on Lake Michigan.

On Friday we visited Sleeping Bear Dunes. These are the dunes we saw off in the distance on our hike Saturday. Meg warned us that the top was not the top. You can see Quinn running up the dune in the middle in the light blue shirt.

We walked uphill in the sand for more than a mile and never got to the top of the dune overlooking Lake Michigan.

A well-deserved cherry based ice cream.

Art gallery pit stop. Love Quinn’s eyebrow.

Departure day. Grandpa and Grandma still in their comfy clothes. Such a lovely trip and time spent with loved ones.

You ever wonder what Quinn’s looking at on his phone? Math. Alot. Like his dad.

We connected through Chicago on the way home. I loved the view out the airplane window.
