New Years in New Orleans (Day 1-2)

We have gained a new appreciation for jazz music since Quinn joined his high school jazz band so why not go to New Orleans and experience the roots of jazz. We went with the Conrath’s and stayed at a hotel on the outskirts of the French Quarter and had a little balcony overlooking the street.

The first night, December 30, we had reservations at Maison for dinner and a live jazz band. A good start!

December 31:

Our Hotel was perfectly located within easy walking distance of the French Quarter and the famous Cafe DuMonde which is known for their beignets and chicory coffee. There was musical entertainment while you waited in line for an hour (we did not wait).

The SugarBowl was being played in NOLA on Jan 1 and there was a big parade on NYE. Look at all those sousaphones in the Texas marching band. The kids had a great time catching beads from the floats.

One type of street performer is the poet. They will write a poem about anything on the spot and you pay them what you wish. Quinn and Anneliese thought it was super easy and Quinn recited a poem about eating a hummingbird. So I found a poet, Young Vagabond, and asked him to write a dark poem about hummingbirds.

We fed the kids and left them in the hotel together and we went off to a black tie NYE party. Looking fancy!

It was pretty fun to spend NYE in New Orleans.
